Scar Revisions
There are many ways we acquire scars - surgery, trauma (such as accidents, burns, dog bites, etc.), skin conditions (such as cystic acne), etc. Most scars will fade over time, but sometimes, scars heal in ways that are less than desirable, even from an aesthetic or functional point of view. Dr. Majewski regularly performs scar revisions for patients who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their scars.
In addition to being unpleasant in appearance, abnormal scarring can cause discomfort/pain, limit motion, affect daily activities (ex: lip scar resulting in drooling), and even cause more severe problems (ex: eyelid scar that results in incomplete eyelid closure and subsequent dryness and ulceration of the cornea).
During your initial consultation, Dr. Majewski will assess your scar(s) and offer a treatment plan to improve their appearance and function. Your treatment plan will depend on the location of the scar, its size, deformity caused by the scar, availability of the local tissues and other factors. Your scar revision may consist of dermabrasion, simple scar excision and closure, flap or skin graft, other surgical techniques, or aesthetic treatments such as microneedling, or laser resurfacing which are performed at M Spa at the Reserve.
Dr. Majewski will explain the details of the procedure, alternative options (if available), risks and complications, and a recovery plan during your consultation. Then, you will schedule a follow-up appointment during which the scar revision will take place. Most of those procedures are done in the office under local anesthesia. Occasionally, due to the location, size or type of the scar, revision in the operating room may be needed.
If your scars are upsetting to you for either aesthetic or functional reasons, schedule an appointment with Dr. Majewski to see what he can do for you.
